What we watch for
Substrate and exposure notes.
Old Beerwah timber needs the most care. We check weatherboards and window sills for soft spots and replace bad sections before painting. Paint that could be older than 1970 gets a lead test before any sanding, and fibro eaves on older homes get an asbestos test. The newer brick and rendered homes are simpler, though render can crack around windows and needs filling first. Heat is a bigger problem than salt out here. Paint put on a wall that's baking in the afternoon sun dries too fast and can blister, so we plan each side of the house for the cooler part of the day. Cold winter mornings mean a later start on the shaded walls.
