Nambour sits at the foot of the Blackall Range, right where the coastal plain meets the hinterland. It grew as a sugar town, and the cane mill ran in the middle of town until it closed in 2003. The oldest houses sit in the streets around the old town centre. Many are 1920s and 1930s timber homes with gables and wide front stairs. Old Nambour timber needs care before it needs paint. Any coating from before 1970 gets a lead test first, and on a 1920s house that's nearly every layer. Fibro eaves and later fibro add-ons, like enclosed verandahs, get checked for asbestos before anyone touches them. Hand prep keeps the edges crisp on brackets and arches. Boards that have split or rotted near the ground get cut out and replaced with matching timber. The town sits low under the range and summers are humid, so mould on the shady side of the house is common. The brick homes on the hills are simpler. They mostly need sound trims, fascias and gutters before fresh colour goes on.
