How long does house paint take to dry?
By J. James Painting Contractors. Updated . 9 min read.
Short answer
The Dulux and Taubmans water-based wall, ceiling and exterior paints we checked are touch dry in 20 to 30 minutes and ready for a second coat after about 2 hours. Oil-based enamel is much slower. Dulux lists 4 hours to touch dry and 16 hours to recoat for Super Enamel High Gloss. Then there's curing, which takes longer again. Dulux says paint can take around a full week in normal weather to reach full washability.
So dry has three stages: dry to touch, dry enough for the next coat, and hard enough to scrub. On the Sunshine Coast, humid days stretch all three. Here's what each stage means and why paint sometimes stays tacky.
Short answer: touch dry in minutes, recoat in hours, washable in about a week
Paint dries in stages, and each one has its own clock. Water-based wall paint is touch dry in about half an hour, ready to recoat in about 2 hours, and fully washable after about a week. Those three numbers answer most questions people have about fresh paint.
- Touch dry. The surface no longer feels wet. Dulux says Wash&Wear Low Sheen is touch dry in 30 minutes, and Ceiling White in 20 minutes.
- Recoat. The first coat is dry enough to take the second. Dulux lists 2 hours for both, and says the first coat must be completely dry before the next goes on.
- Cured. The paint has hardened. Haymes says paint may feel dry within hours without being fully cured, and that curing goes on for many days, sometimes weeks.
- Washable. Dulux says paint can take around a full week in normal weather to develop full washability.
Touch dry is the stage that fools people. A wall can feel fine under your finger and still mark if a couch gets pushed against it.
Drying times by paint type, from the makers' own pages
Water-based paints recoat in about 2 hours and oil-based enamel takes about 16. The table below lists drying times as Dulux and Taubmans publish them on their Australian product pages. Treat them as the shortest wait. On a cool or humid day, the real wait is longer.
| Product | Clean-up and use | Touch dry | Recoat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dulux Wash&Wear Low Sheen | Water, interior walls | 30 minutes | 2 hours |
| Dulux Ceiling White | Water, ceilings | 20 minutes | 2 hours |
| Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss | Water, doors and trim (water-based enamel) | 30 minutes | 2 hours |
| Dulux Super Enamel High Gloss | Mineral turpentine, doors and trim (oil-based enamel) | 4 hours | 16 hours |
| Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen | Water, exterior | 20 minutes | 2 hours (at 25 degrees and 50% humidity) |
| Taubmans All Weather | Water, exterior (water-based) | 30 minutes | 2 hours |
The Weathershield row is the only one that states its test conditions: 25 degrees and 50% humidity. Keep that in mind for the humidity section below. The oil-based enamel cleans up with mineral turpentine, while every other paint in the table cleans up with water.
Two coats in one day works with water-based paint, not oil-based enamel
Yes, painters can put two coats of water-based paint on in one day. With a 2-hour recoat, a first coat in the morning can take its second coat after lunch. Taubmans and Haymes both say to give the first coat at least two hours. Dulux's line for Wash&Wear is that the first coat must be completely dry, so treat 2 hours as the minimum.
Oil-based enamel won't fit in one day. Dulux gives Super Enamel High Gloss a 16-hour recoat, so the second coat goes on the next day. Water-based enamel is the faster choice for doors and trim. Dulux lists Aquanamel Semi Gloss at 30 minutes touch dry and 2 hours to recoat.
For Aquanamel, Dulux suggests a light sand between coats for the smoothest finish, then remove the dust before you recoat. Our guide on painting doors, skirting and frames covers the trim work in order. For walls, how to paint a room walks through the full sequence from prep to second coat.
Humidity, cold and thick coats all slow drying down
Paint dries slower on humid, cool or damp days, and Sunshine Coast air is humid for most of the year. Dulux bases Weathershield's 2-hour recoat on 50% humidity. The Bureau of Meteorology's averages for Sunshine Coast Airport put 3pm humidity above 50% in every month of the year.
| Time of day | Most humid month | Least humid month |
|---|---|---|
| 9am | 76% (June) | 65% (September) |
| 3pm | 71% (February) | 59% (July and August) |
Dulux's advice for extremely humid, cool or damp weather is to allow extra time for paint to dry completely. Thick coats slow things down as well. Dulux says two coats at the recommended spread rate are better than one thick coat, and Taubmans links heavy application to wrinkling. Taubmans gives an ideal painting range of 10 to 35 degrees.
The practical rule: read the recoat time on the tin as the shortest wait you'll get. On a muggy February day, give it longer and check the first coat before you start the second.
Why paint stays tacky, wrinkles or sticks, and the fix for each
Taubmans links tacky paint to cold, damp air and poor airflow. Other drying faults look different. Wrinkling comes from thick coats or a second coat put on too soon, and doors stick when they're closed too early. Here's each fault with the fix, taken from Dulux and Taubmans troubleshooting advice.
- Cold, damp air or poor airflow. Taubmans says these conditions can cause tackiness or sagging, and names wet seasons in the north as a common time for it. Its fix is good airflow and painting within 10 to 35 degrees. Open windows and give it more time.
- Wrinkling from thick coats. Taubmans says wrinkling happens when the top of the paint dries faster than the layer under it, often from heat or heavy application, and it's common with slow-drying alkyd enamels. Thin, even coats and the full recoat interval fix it.
- Wrinkling from an early recoat. Dulux lists a topcoat over a first coat that wasn't dry enough as a cause of wrinkling. Wait out the recoat time.
- Doors and windows sticking. Dulux calls this blocking: two painted surfaces sticking together when pressed, like a door sticking to the jamb. Its cause is closing doors or windows before the paint has had enough dry time.
- Blotchy, glossy or brownish patches. Dulux calls this surfactant leaching, and lists painting in cool, humid conditions as a cause. It can sometimes be rinsed off in the first day, and Dulux says stubborn cases generally wear off in a month or so.
Blocking: doors and windows that stick to the frame
A freshly painted door that sticks to its jamb has blocked, and the fix is more dry time plus the right paint. Dulux says acrylic enamels have better early block resistance than vinyl latex or solvent-based enamels, and it notes some water-based paints show poor block resistance. Its recommendation for doors and windows is a premium semi-gloss or gloss acrylic enamel such as Aquanamel, and following the dry times on the label.
For exterior window trim, Dulux's Weathershield instructions spell out the routine. Paint while the windows are open. Leave them at least 2 hours to dry before closing. Then open them again within 30 minutes, and another 2 to 3 times in the first 24 hours.
When you can clean, hang pictures and move furniture back
Give furniture at least 24 hours and give cleaning about a week. Haymes suggests keeping furniture away from freshly painted walls for at least 24 hours, and Dulux says full washability takes around a week in normal weather. Here's a simple timeline for a room painted in water-based paint.
- Pull the masking tape before the paint dries completely, as Haymes advises.
- Keep doors and windows open until the trim paint has had its full dry time. Dulux names closing them too early as a cause of blocking, so follow the dry times on the label.
- Push furniture back after at least 24 hours, as Haymes suggests.
- Hang pictures once the wall has had time to harden. No maker we checked gives a set time, so waiting out the week for washability is the safe call.
- Wipe or scrub the walls only after about a week, once Dulux says full washability has developed.
Haymes says the longer new paint is left undisturbed, the more durable it's likely to become. That matters in a holiday let or rental. Our guide on repainting a holiday let between bookings shows how to plan the cleaner's first visit around that week.
Exterior paint needs a dry window after the last coat
Outside, the forecast matters as much as the recoat time. Dulux says rain or overnight dew on Weathershield while it's drying can damage the coating or wash it off. It also says not to paint on excessively cold or humid days, or when rain is forecast.
Dulux's rule for cold days is to stop painting early enough for the paint to dry before evening. Its surfactant leaching advice says the same thing a different way: avoid painting in the late afternoon if a cool, damp evening is coming. So plan the last coat of the day for the warm part of the day, with time to dry before dusk.
Rushing an exterior job can put the guarantee at risk too. Dulux only stands behind Weathershield where it was applied and maintained to the product instructions, and the recoat and weather rules are part of those instructions. Our guide to the best time to paint a house exterior covers which months give the driest run.
Hand it to a painter when the timing is tight
If you're working to a date, such as a listing photo shoot or a guest check-in, the drying times set the schedule. Allow 2 hours or more between water-based coats, 24 hours before the furniture goes back, and about a week before the cleaner scrubs anything.
If you'd rather hand the timing over, talk to our interior house painters about the date you need the room back. For outside walls, see our exterior house painters. We've painted Sunshine Coast homes since 1985 under QBCC licence 1281728, and our locations page lists the suburbs we cover.
Common questions
Questions people ask
My paint is still tacky after a week. What could be causing this?
Taubmans says cold, damp conditions or poor airflow can cause tackiness, and names wet seasons in the north as a common time for it. Open up the room for airflow and give it more time. If doors or windows are sticking to the frame, Dulux calls that blocking. If the paint has wrinkled instead, Dulux links that to thick coats and early recoats. Dulux's fix for wrinkled paint is to scrape or sand it back and repaint in even coats.
How long between coats of paint?
About 2 hours for the water-based paints we checked. Dulux lists a 2-hour recoat for Wash&Wear Low Sheen, Ceiling White, Aquanamel and Weathershield, and Taubmans says the same for All Weather. Oil-based enamel is much slower: Dulux lists 16 hours for Super Enamel High Gloss. On extremely humid, cool or damp days, Dulux says to allow extra time for the paint to dry completely.
How long after painting can you hang pictures?
No paint maker we checked gives a set time for hanging pictures. What they do give: Haymes suggests keeping furniture off fresh walls for at least 24 hours, and Dulux says paint takes around a week in normal weather to reach full washability. Waiting that week before you put hooks and frames back on the wall is the safe call.
How do you make paint dry faster?
Get air moving and keep coats thin. Dulux says good air movement helps paint dry on cold days, and Taubmans recommends good airflow and painting between 10 and 35 degrees. Dulux also says two coats at the recommended spread rate beat one thick coat. Pick a dry day, open the windows, and don't load the roller up to save a coat.
Can paint dry in 1 hour?
Water-based paint can be touch dry well inside an hour. Dulux lists 20 minutes for Ceiling White and Weathershield, and 30 minutes for Wash&Wear Low Sheen and Aquanamel. Touch dry isn't ready to recoat, though. Those same paints need 2 hours before the second coat, and Dulux bases Weathershield's 2 hours on 25 degrees and 50% humidity.
Does rushing the recoat affect the paint guarantee?
It can. Dulux says it only replaces Weathershield under its guarantee if the paint was applied and maintained in line with the product instructions, on a suitable and sound surface. The recoat time and the weather limits are part of those instructions. Painting a second coat over a wet first coat, or just before rain, puts that cover at risk.
Do you paint interiors across the Sunshine Coast?
Yes. We've painted Sunshine Coast homes since 1985, and we hold QBCC licence 1281728. Tell our interior house painters the date you need the room back when you ask for a quote. Check our locations page for the suburbs we cover, then get in touch through our contact page to book a visit.
